NESTE WORLD RX DAY ONE – NITIŠS REACHES THE SEMI-FINAL, BAUMANIS SHOWS GREAT PACE IN PROJEKT E
Today, in sunny and dry weather, the CSDD Biķernieki circuit hosted round five of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, Neste World RX of Rīga. The event was won by two-time world champion Johan Kristoffersson, while Latvian driver Reinis Nitišs managed to reach the semi-final, where he finished fifth. Meanwhile, in the electric rallycross car category Projekt E, Jānis Baumanis is sharing first place after two qualifying races. Neste World RX of Rīga will continue tomorrow, with another full World RX event, as well as the conclusion of the FIA European Rallycross Championship and Project E rounds.
World RX drivers made sure that Neste World RX of Rīga is exciting from the get go, with each of the three qualifying heats won by a different team driver – Johan Kristoffersson (Volkswagen Polo GTI RX), Niclas Gronholm (GRX Taneco), and Mattias Ekstrom (KYB Team JC) each setting a fastest time. Gronholm was the leader in the intermediate classification, but his race concluded with a disappointing fifth place in the final. After making a great start, Johan Kristoffersson was in control throughout the final and came away with a victory, followed by fellow Swedish drivers Mattias Ekstrom and Timmy Hansen.
Latvian driver Reinis Nitišs is also taking part in both rounds at Neste World RX of Rīga. After three consistent heats at the wheel of the ESmotorsport prepared Škoda Fabia Evo RX, Nitišs was eleventh in the intermediate classification, moving on to the semi-final. There, he managed to get around some contact in the start to briefly get up to third position. Even though he managed to keep Krisztian Szabo behind, both Timmy Hansen and Andreas Bakkerud managed to get ahead and Nitišs crossed the finish line in fifth place.
Neste World RX of Rīga is also hosting a round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Supercar class, where the winner will be determined on Sunday. The first two qualyfing heats were won by, respectively, Norwegian Sondre Evjen in a Volkswagen Polo, and Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Dubourg in a Peugeot 308.
For the first time, Rīga also hosted a competitive outing for the electric rallycross cars competing in Projekt E. Driving a Ford Fiesta ERX, Latvian driver Jānis Baumanis won the first qualifying heat, after an exciting battle with Cyril Raymond, who is driving a Citroen Racing supported Citroen C3 ERX. In the second qualifying, Raymond got his revenge, beating Baumanis off the start line and maintaining his lead until the finish.
