TIMMY HANSEN WINS FERRATUM CHALLENGE
Before this weekend’s FIA World Rallycross Championship double-header, Ferratum World RX of Rīga, the World RX and Euro RX1 competitors tried their hand in a slot car event today. Ferratum Challenge was won by the current World RX championship leader Timmy Hansen.
On Friday, Riga Motor Museum hosted Ferratum Challenge, where rallycross competitors battled it out with slot cars on a 1:43 scale version of the Biķernieki rallycross circuit. Even though it might seem that driving slot cars requires a completely different skillset to competing in rallycross with a powerful race car, the four drivers advancing to today’s final were Timmy and Kevin Hansen, both of whom have won a World RX event this year, the three time World RX champion Johan Kristoffersson, and, representing the European Championship drivers, Anders Michalak, who advanced to the final after a tense battle with Latvian driver Edijs Ošs, who spun out after a side by side battle over multiple laps.
The qualifying heats were two minutes long, the semi-finals went on for three minutes, but the Ferratum Challenge final was four minutes long. Competitor enthusiasm grew with each heat, with Mattias Ekstrom demonstrating his engineering prowess by always making sure that his car model had clean tires and trying to modify the cars to further improve performance. Not surprisingly for a rallycross type event, four Swedish drivers advanced to the final, with Timmy Hansen ultimately coming out on top with 38 laps in four minutes. Anders Michalak finished second, two laps behind Timmy, with Kristoffersson third at 32 laps, just beating Kevin Hansen who managed to do 31 lap.
During the final, Timmy Hansen also set the fastest lap time of Ferratum Challenge, going around in 5.788 seconds. After finish, Timmy was clear that analysing the track just like he would in a regular rallycross event, was one of the keys to his victory: “With each start, we are always trying our best to win, even if this is just a fun event. Each lap, I got more and more used to the car and its reactions to my inputs – precise input management was what led me to this result,” concluded Timmy Hansen after his victory.
